About Webequie First Nation
Located in Northwestern Ontario, Webequie First Nation is a fly-in community situated along the Winisk River, approximately 540 kilometres north of Thunder Bay. With a population of roughly 1,000 residents, Webequie is part of the Matawa Tribal Council and has a rich cultural heritage rooted in the Oji-Cree language and traditions.
The name “Webequie” is believed to derive from an Oji-Cree word meaning “shaking head,” often interpreted as a reference to the movement of water in the surrounding river systems. Like many northern communities, year-round access depends heavily on reliable air service.
