About Sanirajak (Hall Beach)
Located in Nunavut, Sanirajak—formerly known as Hall Beach—is a remote Arctic community situated on the Melville Peninsula along the shores of Foxe Basin, approximately 2,250 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
With a population of roughly 900 residents, Sanirajak is a predominantly Inuit community with a strong cultural identity rooted in Inuit language, traditions, and a deep connection to the land and sea. The name “Sanirajak” reflects the community's Inuit heritage and identity, following its official renaming in recent years.
The community was originally established in connection with the nearby Hall Beach Radar Station as part of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line during the Cold War, and continues to maintain historical significance in Canada's Arctic.
Like many Arctic communities, Hall Beach relies on air service year-round, with seasonal sealift providing additional access for bulk goods during the summer months.
