With a population of roughly 1,300 residents, Gjoa Haven is a predominantly Inuit community with a strong cultural identity rooted in Inuit language, traditions, and a deep connection to the land and sea. The community is named after the ship Gjøa, used by explorer Roald Amundsen during the first successful navigation of the Northwest Passage in the early 1900s. The area also has deep historical significance related to the Franklin Expedition, making it an important site in Arctic exploration history.
