Located in Northern Ontario, Attawapiskat First Nation is a remote community situated along the Attawapiskat River near the western shores of James Bay, approximately 300 kilometres north of Timmins.
With a population of roughly 2,000 residents, Attawapiskat is a Cree community and a member of the Mushkegowuk Council, which represents several Cree First Nations along the James Bay and Hudson Bay coasts. The name “Attawapiskat” is often translated as “people of the rocky area,” reflecting the unique limestone formations found along the riverbanks.
