Located in Nunavut, Arctic Bay—known in Inuktitut as Ikpiarjuk—is a remote Arctic community situated on the northern tip of Baffin Island along Admiralty Inlet, approximately 2,700 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
With a population of roughly 900 residents, Arctic Bay is a predominantly Inuit community with a strong cultural identity rooted in Inuit language, traditions, and a deep connection to the land and sea. The name “Ikpiarjuk” means “the pocket,” referring to the shape of the inlet where the community is located.
Arctic Bay is one of the northernmost communities in Canada and serves as a gateway to nearby Nanisivik, a former mining site that is being redeveloped as a strategic Arctic port.
Like many Arctic communities, Arctic Bay relies on air service year-round, with seasonal sealift providing additional access for bulk goods during the summer months.
